Powel House

Philadelphia

This elegant Georgian brick mansion was home to Samuel Powel, a mayor of Philadelphia in the colonial era, thus a focal point of the city's social life in the 18th century. Noteworthy guests included George and Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, who enjoyed 'a sinful feast' here. Its interior is a simulacrum – the original was stripped away decades ago, with parts of it installed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
