The Rookery

Brooklyn: Williamsburg, Greenpoint & Bushwick

Dominated by an imposing-yet-welcoming horseshoe bar that claims the center of the room, the Rookery acknowledges its industrial past (as many places do in this art- and bar-rich corner of Bushwick) but keeps things cosy, contemporary and crucially, friendly. There's a beer garden out front for warm weather, plus pints of draft beer, whiskeys and a playful (occasionally spicy) set of cocktails.

Lunchtime pub grub such as pork chop cassoulet, three-cheese mac and curried goat shepherd's pie are welcome if you're feeling delicate (mains $12 to $18); there's an emphasis on West Indian meets British flavors.
