Ten miles southwest of Wiscasset on tranquil Westport Island (connected by bridge), this 1763 farmhouse has been converted into a charmingly rustic, yet elegantly modern country inn. The dozen guest rooms are sunny and old-fashioned – some have fireplaces and beamed ceilings – and the pastoral setting is achingly lovely. Guests can borrow bikes, or a rowboat to explore the salt marsh.
Breakfasts are first-class, and on Mondays management cooks up pizzas in a wood-fire oven.
