Rose Hotel

Venice, Marina Del Rey & Playa del Rey

This intimate, low-slung, pension-style inn was built in 1908 and recently refurbished with beach-cottage cool. It's on a quiet street just off the beach and offers small (150-sq-ft) rooms with bathrooms down the hall, coffee and croissants for breakfast, surfboards for loan and bikes for rent. Larger, family-friendly suites have private baths, kitchens and living rooms.

Walls are a bit thin and most rooms don't have TVs or phones, but, dude, you're at the beach.

Note that the reception desk is unstaffed overnight, but there is security and guests get keys.

Nearby parking lots cost $20 to $30 overnight.
