Mweya Safari Lodge

Southwestern Uganda

Queen Elizabeth's iconic, classic safari lodge has a commanding location with excellent views over Lake Edward and Kazinga Channel, with herds of hippos and buffaloes. Set in a resort-like complex, it offers everything from hotel-style rooms (some cramped) to luxury tents and plush cottages, most with water views. Come sunset, the terrace overlooking the water is the place to be.

There's also a spa and health club (handy when you don't want to jog among lions). Even if you're not staying here it's worth popping in for a meal (mains from USh20,000) or a G&T at the atmospheric bar with Chesterfield couches, a fireplace and hunting relics from yesteryear (including a giant set of tusks). History buffs can stay where Queen Elizabeth was when she woke up to news that she was queen (cottage US$1190).
