Kayadibi Saklıbahçe

Top choice in Sumela

This 'Hidden Garden', around two thirds of the way to Sumela from Trabzon, serves some of the best Black Sea dishes in the region. Ideally order a mixture of dishes to share (around two per head) including polenta-like cheesy kuymak, karalahana sarması (mince-stuffed collard leaves) and pazı kavurma (slightly spicy sautéed chard, potato and onion mix).

There's an airy, glass-sided main dining hall but the place retains a pleasantly uncommercial village feel and there is plenty of outdoor seating. It's a steep 100m up a lane that climbs off the old D885 road near the southern end of the Şehit Ferhat Gedik Tunnel. From central Maçka it's around 10 minutes' walk north, forking left just after the river bridge.
