Amsterdam Roest

Top choice in Amsterdam

This is one of those 'only in Amsterdam' places, and well worth the trip. Once-derelict shipyards now host this epically cool artist collective–bar-restaurant, with a canal-side terrace, mammoth playground of ropes and tyres, hammocks, street art, a sandy beach in summer and bonfires in winter. Note that it will close for renovations in September 2019 and is not due to reopen until around 2021.

The bar interior is a crazy warehouse of sofas and industrial-art confections. Regular events are hosted, including films, live music, festivals, fashion shows and markets. It's slightly tricky to find; the most direct approach is to go along Oostenburgervoorstraat and cross the bridge at the northern end – it's 150m ahead on your left.
