Jafr Agro-Eco Centre Guesthouse

Tajikistan

Botanist, poet and collector Mirzosho Akobirov has spent decades planting seeds and saplings in his experimental orchards and his green-fingered endeavours have earned him the praise of the president himself. The garden makes a peaceful setting for the on-site guesthouse, run by Mirzosho's six sons. Accommodation is basic but the opportunity to explore this horticultural treasure trove amply compensates.

Only limited English is spoken at the homestay, but guides (US$20 per day) and horses (US$20 per person per day) can be arranged for hiking in the foothills above the valley. With tents and yurts available, an overnight trip is possible. For spectacular views, however, look no further than Mirzosho's octagonal pergola, at the entrance of Jafr village beside the 182km road marker.
