Fei Qian Wu

Taipei

There’s no English sign for this extremely popular unagi (eel) restaurant; you’ll spot it by the long lines waiting outside. The queue moves quickly though, and you can scan the menu while you wait. Almost everyone orders the eel rice (which comes in hot, ready-prepared lidded boxes) and egg rolls. The grilled squid is delectable and a steal at NT$90.

If you don’t want to wait in line, this is – after all – Taipei's Japanese district and there are dozens other Japanese restaurants in the surrounding lanes.
