During the early decades of the post-WWII boom, dozens of small family-run inns dotted Beitou's winding alleys. Solo Singer, the love project of a group of young Taiwanese artists, historians and hotel professionals, is a charming restoration (the owners would say rebirth) of one of these. There are just 10 rooms so book ahead; discounts are common. Triples and four-bed spaces are available.
The lobby has a wonderful telephone exchange that was used in the original hotel. Just down the lane is a small cafe which serves breakfast to guests and coffee and cake to the public (2pm to 10pm Tuesday to Sunday). Ask for a copy of their tourist map of the area.
