Camping Nelson

Mo'orea

A long-time budget favourite – an easy distinction given the lack of competitors – Camping Nelson boasts a spiffing lagoon frontage (but no shade to speak of). Pitch your tent on the grassy plot within earshot of the gentle surf, or choose one of the claustrophobic cabins in a barrackslike building. For more privacy, consider one of the pricier, more comfortable bungalows.

The spartan three-bed dorms, devoid of electrical sockets, fans and mosquito nets, are best avoided. Perks include hot water in the (salubrious) shared bathrooms and wi-fi access at the reception (open from 8.30am to noon and 1.30pm to 5pm). There's no communal kitchen, but there are cheap eateries nearby. Cash only.
