As the name suggests, this hotel has zero stars – apart from the ones twinkling above you, that is… In one of Switzerland's most romantic ventures, you'll be collected from Gonten station and driven to your bed in the middle of nature. No walls. No roof. Just birdsong and the first light creeping over craggy Alpine summits as your wake-up call.
The location (near Gonten) is kept pretty hush-hush, so a butler (read: farmer) picks you up and escorts you to the hotel, brings your breakfast basket and provides a welcome drink. Never has the phrase 'room with a view' been more opportune. It's a six-minute train ride from Appenzell to Gonten.
