Halfway House

Northern Cape

After a revamp, 'The Half' has sadly lost a little of its soul. Dating back to 1872, this was once one of Cecil Rhodes' watering holes and today it might be the world’s only 'drive-in' bar, stemming from Rhodes’ insistence on being served beer without dismounting his horse. There's beer on tap and upscale pub grub is served.

The interiors are beautifully historic, with spittoons along the base of the scarred, wood-backed bar, as well as a few old liquor ads and frosted windows etched with Rhodes quotes. There are guest rooms upstairs and in the adjoining building, though the noise from the pub can sometimes be a problem.
