Terra-Khaya

Eastern Cape

Get way off the grid at this unique and inspiring mountainside farm retreat situated at 1350m. The DIY aesthetic and philosophy of the owner (bareback-riding Shane of Amathole Horse Trails) is suffused throughout: everything is made from wattle, daub and recycled materials; electrical plug points are only found in the lounge; and ablutions consist of donkey-boiler showers and composting toilets.

With its sweeping views, this wonderfully tranquil place is difficult to leave. It's accessed via a steep, rough road, which is normally passable in a 2WD vehicle in dry weather. Wi-fi is available on request.
