George Hotel

KwaZulu-Natal

Dripping with character, this grand old hotel (1902) is a good midrange option. Rooms are a bit old and rickety (and water pressure can be hit-and-miss), but the huge beds are very comfy. The budget wing is a bit dingy but offers good value (single/double R450/600). The restaurant menu is limited, but the food is well prepared.

Two of the hotel's best features are its veranda, perfect for a sunset drink, and its lounge, with ancient reading material and a cosy vibe. There is a bar–music venue and a cafe is also on-site.
