Chata Pieniny

Eastern Slovakia

Not only a great port of call for rafting, Chata Pieniny is also a cosy overnight base. This is a classic Slovak country inn, from its tasteful, wooden-floored rooms to the antler-lined dining room (with luck, you'll catch some live accordion tunes). There's a wellness centre with sauna (€10) and walking trails from the doorstep. Wi-fi doesn't reach all rooms.

The restaurant dishes up satisfying hiking fuel from goulash with bread dumplings to roasted trout (mains €5 to €9).
