Dalton's Banana Guest House

Sierra Leone

Set on a lovely patch of golden beach, on a glorious tropical island, you'd think this place would be a winner. And while it has much to recommend it (the dining/lounging area is covered by a soaring double height thatch-roof, complete with raised wooden platform to take in the views), the rooms are dark and dingy and don't take advantage of their location.

That said, the staff is friendly, the food good, and the activities on offer excellent, from diving, to deep-sea fishing, to hiking, to trips to the Turtle Islands.
