Set in spectacular jungle surroundings in the remote heart of the island, Pousada Bombaim occupies the central plantation house on the otherwise eerily abandoned Roça Bombaim. Unfortunately this classic home with its two-storey verandas has seen better days. What should be a five star inn is now a hostel with basic rooms, plain food and a widespread lack of maintenance.
However, if you recognize that up front, you can enjoy the wacky unreality of this remote site, and include several hikes to the nearby waterfalls, and the ruins of another era. Bom Sucesso and the east coast at Agua Izé are both a six-hour walk from here. And the drive in from Trindade is lovely, although a guide helps.
