At Benedictine, 18 miles northeast of Salem, the monks of Mount Angel Abbey brew Belgian-style beers using centuries-old monastic traditions. One of three monk-operated breweries in the country, they use water drawn from the abbey well and hops that have grown on the grounds since the 1880s. The brewery's serene Saint Michael's Taproom was constructed by volunteers using Douglas Fir timber from the abbey's tree farm.
