The star attraction of this sprawling 225-room complex is the lawn-fronted waterfront complete with jetty and beach volleyball. The hotel was founded in 1861 but a displayed cube of wooden beam is all that remains of the original. Today's architecture appears drearily functional, but within, unexpected sweeps of older staircases add a semblance of character.
Most rooms have been renovated and the newest wing (no views) dates from 2017. Some single rooms are fairly small. The swimming pool was under reconstruction at the time of research but should reopen by summer 2018 as part of a spa-sauna-gym complex. Guests get free entry to the next-door casino.
