At the end of the road, around 150km from Carnarvon, Gnaraloo Station is the jewel in the crown of the Gascoyne Coast. Surfers from around the world come from April to October to ride the notorious Tombstones, while hotter months bring wind- and kitesurfers trying to catch the Carnarvon Doctor, the strong afternoon sea breeze. Camp or stay at the homestead.
There are terrific campsites next to a gorgeous lagoon at 3-Mile Camp, near Tombstones, or there's a range of options up at the homestead (5km further north of the 3-Mile turn-off) that range from the basic swaggers' camp and shearing shed to self-contained stone cabins (bathroom and kitchen) with uninterrupted ocean views – great for spotting migrating whales (between June and November) and sea eagles.
Don't leave without visiting the eye-burningly pristine Gnaraloo Bay, 7km from the homestead. Here and around 3-Mile Camp, there's excellent snorkelling close to shore.
Gnaraloo is dedicated to sustainability and has implemented a number of visionary environmental programs. The station is always looking for willing workers. Just be aware that this is a working station in the Australian outback, not a luxury resort.
