Modessa Island Resort

Palawan

This private-island resort is off Roxas, halfway between El Nido and Puerto Princesa. The main beach is a teardrop-shaped gem, and snorkellers can spot black-tip reef sharks on the terrific house reef. Cottages face the beach and employ native materials, with hammocks, shelving and mozzie nets. Unfortunately the showers are salt-water – hope for rain if you want a fresh-water rinse.

There's a dive centre (shore dives P1000), and kayak rental is available. Boat transfers from Roxas (45 minutes) are included in the price. Get up early for the 25-minute walk around the island, which brims with bird life.
