Our favourite budget resort in western Visayas, Cabugan is a particular kind of earthy tropical paradise. The resort hides on a spit of white sand between a headland and a huge coral rock; think of Scaramanga's lair in The Man with the Golden Gun. On one side a sea of islets, on another a private bay.
Nipa huts sleeping four or more cling to the cliffs, with views in all directions; the Sunrise rooms (P1200) are to die for, as are lunch and dinner (P250 each). Crabs, lobsters and big barracuda are caught nearby. A central beach volleyball court brings guests together. Canoes are available for wider exploration. The secret recipe: it's not really a resort, it's a new way of life.
