About 45 minutes by taxi from Yungay toward the Lagunas Llanganuco, this recommended lodge run by Brit Charlie Good is in a prime position for serious acclimatization, exploring the lakes area or the Santa Cruz Trek. It is perched at 3500m next to Keushu ruins on the shore of a translucent lagoon and offers guided hikes right from the door.
Lodge rooms are big on space and comfort with down-feather beds, Don Bosco wooden furniture (made in Chacas), traditional rugs and old-fashioned stoves. Balconies afford great views of the three highest peaks in the range and the food, usually taken outside on the terraced lawn, is legendary. Unusually for Peru, the super-fresh tap water is drinkable.
From Yungay, taxis departing in front of the town hospital charge S50 for the ride here. Reservations are essential.
