Myrkdalen Hotel

Top choice in Bergen & the Southwestern Fjords

The ski resort revolves around this large, stylish, timber-clad hotel, with great rooms in a retro-modern vibe: funky lampshades, mid-century furniture, and taupes and greys accented by pops of colour. There are three restaurants serving everything from pizza to lamb shanks, salmon and fondue, plus two stylish bars, but the real selling point is outside: epic views of mountains through every window.

There are also black-timber, turf-topped, self-catering cabins and apartments, arranged in a sprawling village beneath the ski runs. Inside they show an attention to detail and design flair: all have flat-screen TVs and dishwashers, most have a fireplace, and some have laundry facilities and saunas, too.

They've also recently added a converted bunk-barn to the roster, refurbished with Zen simplicity: Japanese-style mats for bedding, some candles and a coffee pot.
