Grootberg Lodge

Damaraland

This place has the best views we witnessed on our most recent research trip in Namibia, and the valley of this stunning setting is where you can track black rhino – yes, you get to drive down into that valley! An extraordinary location brought home by the very steep approach track, this is a genuinely wild, open space – there are no fences. Rooms are large and luxurious, but it's the views that you'll remember most.

The rhino are elusive, however, and much of the tracking is spent in the vehicle, or on foot either following the trackers or waiting around for them to get a new lead. But the prize is a chance to see one of Africa’s most endangered animals in the wild. Other animals you may see are desert elephants, mountain cheetahs, lions, antelope (such as steenboks, klipspringers, springboks and gemsboks), as well as zebras. After a hard day tracking wildlife, the massage centre is just the ticket.

Grootberg lies 25km east of Palmwag and 90km west of Kamanjab – take the C40.
