Perched on a ridge at 5820ft, 19 miles from Mindat, Aye (meaning cold) is an elongated wooden building lined with rooms with nothing more than mattresses with blankets on the floor. Outhouses with hot-water showers are out back. The manager and chef, Htat Shwe Aung, speaks some English and prepares excellent breakfasts and dinners (K8000). Evenings around a fire under starry skies are magical.
It's about an hour's drive to the base of Mt Victoria from here. It's also a recommended and typical spot to overnight when on guided treks in the area; it's a steep climb up here from the Chi River, or a logical terminus when mountain biking down from the village of Htat Shwe.
