The Ulaanbaatar Hotel is the grand old dame of Mongolia. Opened in 1961, this was where Soviet dignitaries stayed during their visits to the ‘Red Hero’. It still carries an air of the Khrushchev era with its high ceilings, chandeliers, marble staircase and lavish ballroom. Rooms are well appointed, but some are a bit small.
Despite being considered a top-end hotel you might experience some imperfections here – fickle air-con, poor service, spotty hot water, unreliable wi-fi, and other minor inconveniences. Consider it part of the adventure. The hotel also contains two restaurants, a coffee shop, travel agency, business centre and sauna.
