Maikhan Tolgoi

Top choice in Mongolia

Set on a pretty headland on the northern shore of the lake, Maikhan Tolgoi is easily the most attractive camp on the lake. The well-maintained gers are right on the water, and there are clean flush toilets and hot showers. The cosy restaurant-bar (open 7am to 10pm; mains T5000 to T15,000) does a tasty tsuivan (noodles) that goes beautifully with a cold beer.

The restaurant has a national park atmosphere with wildlife posters and taxidermy, and wi-fi is available here for T3000 per hour.

The camp is located next to a craggy rock reminiscent of the Scottish highlands. Here there's a private beach, as well as a range of activities on offer including boating, bicycle hire, horse riding, archery and fishing – all for around T15,000 per hour.
