Maisen

Harajuku & Aoyama

Maisen is famous both for its tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlets) and its setting (an old public bathhouse). There are different grades of pork on the menu, including prized kurobuta (black pig), but even the cheapest is melt-in-your-mouth divine; the very reasonable lunch set is served until 4pm. The ebi-katsu (breaded, deep-fried prawns), are excellent, too.

A takeaway window (10am to 7pm) serves delicious tonkatsu sando (tonkatsu sandwiches; from ¥430). There are branches (this is the main shop) all over town and many department store food halls sell Maisen sandwiches – always a great meal in a pinch.
