A highly respected winery set in green hills 6km from Orvieto, Locanda Palazzone makes for an idyllic countryside getaway. Its suites and four-person apartment, all in a converted medieval pilgrim's house, combine historical details with low-key modern decor, and its fine-dining restaurant (closed Mondays) excites with its updated regional cuisine and superlative wines (tasting menu €50). Reservations required.
Palazzone's most renowned wine is Campo del Guardiano, a white blended from Procanico, Grechetto, Verdello, Drupeggio and Malvasia grapes. To learn more, you can sign up for one of several tour-and-tasting packages, ranging from a simple three-wine tasting (€15) to tours of the winery (€25 to €45 including appetisers or a light lunch) and four-course wine-tasting dinners (€70).
