Federico Pruneti is the youngest member of what is becoming an endangered group: Volterra's alabaster carvers. After studying art and doing a one-year apprenticeship with a local master craftsman, he now operates this small, dust-covered atelier near the Porta all'Arco. The atelier is usually closed in October and November when Federico practices his other traditional occupation – truffle hunting.
