Il Fornaio

Bergamo

With its wedges of focaccia-style pizza displayed like colourful art in the front window, it’s no wonder this bakery-cafe is perennially crowded. This is the kind of food that makes you hungry just looking at it, big square slabs of pizza generously topped with everything from folded cured meats to gleaming white cheese.

Some take the goodies upstairs to enjoy in a large but windowless eating space but, if the weather cooperates, the nearby piazza is a much prettier alternative.

If you make it past the pizza, Il Fornaio also sells bread, panini, cakes and biscuits.
