Ross Castle

Counties Meath, Louth, Cavan & Monaghan

Situated 9km south of Ballyjamesduff, this 1590 castle was partially destroyed by Cromwell but rebuilt by the Nugent family. It's not for the fainthearted – the steps get steeper and narrower the higher you climb into its tower (where three of its six rooms are located) and it's reputedly haunted. Its two cheapest rooms, in a ground-level annex, share a bathroom.
