Barandaz Lodge

Top choice in Iran

In the tiny outpost of Farahzad, neighbouring Mesr, this 11-room guesthouse occupies two beautifully restored mud-brick houses. The simple rooms with traditional bedding, hydronic heating and clean bathrooms are arranged around a tiny courtyard, while home-prepared meals (dinner US$10) using locally sourced ingredients are served in the carpeted iwan.

If relaxing into the magical sense of seclusion isn't diverting enough, guests can stargaze, ride the resident camels, stride out across the desert or take a two-hour 4WD sunrise or sunset tour (US$80 per car).
