Atik, owner, tour guide and author, is on a mission to preserve traditional Javanese culture at this unique guesthouse, which offers a nostalgic trip back to her childhood memories of growing up in this kampung. Rooms are in a converted Javanese house and mix modern comforts with a traditional aesthetic. On Sunday local children pop by for a range of cultural workshops.
It's located a short stroll from the Buddhist temple Candi Pawon. Atik runs fascinating tours to Borobudur (2km west) that, as well as visiting the temple, involve anything from learning to cook her mum's curry and making tempeh to producing coconut palm sugar. Keep an eye out for the new country guesthouse, which will open in 2020.
