The mighty 19th-century palace of the raja of Dhenkanal is set against the foothills of the Eastern Ghats, overlooking the quaint town of Dhenkanal. The 13 sumptuous, well-restored rooms have en-suite bathrooms, period furniture and colourful upholstery, and guests have access to the present raja's library. Trips to surrounding villages can be arranged.
Garh Dhenkanal has traditionally been the most important of the Singh Deo royal family's several estates and palaces around Dhenkanal, serving as the royal residence. The current raja, now in his seventies, has a dedicated public service record: he was a brigadier in the Indian army and was elected multiple times as a member of the Indian Parliament.
