Pal's Hostel

Budapest

This is a tough nut to crack. When is a hostel not a hostel? When it’s a string of apartments spread throughout Lipótváros, for which the good folk at reception (open 10am to 2pm daily) opposite the Basilica of St Stephen in Szent István tér will organise a bed or a room for the night.

The public areas around reception – lounge, huge modern kitchen with wooden floor, laundry room – and the balcony looking right onto the basilica are impassive, as is the naive artwork throughout. This place with the friendly name is certainly a cut above the rest.
