With a tradition dating back to 1894 and past guests including royalty and presidents, Gundel is one of Budapest's fanciest and most famous restaurants. In the evenings, musicians entertain guests amid opulent surroundings, and while the pleasure of dining here doesn't come cheap, dishes are beautifully executed. Sunday brunch (11.30am to 3pm) and weekday lunch are relative bargains. Dress smartly and book ahead.
Apparently Gundel still feeds the Habsburgs – or what’s left of them – when they’re in town.
