A true Robinson Crusoe experience, minus the building work. That's been done by Francois, a grizzled, friendly and passionate Frenchman who runs this small out-of-the-way retreat on 50-hectare Angurman Island. Three simple bungalows with cold-water bathrooms and porches front the shoreline. An enormous baobab tree, straight out of Avatar, towers over an idyllic spot where meals are served.
When the tide is out, it's a good spot for swimming and there's a nice white sand spit for sunning. Angurman is part of the traditional land of the Soga Island people, and Francois can arrange kayak and birdwatching trips to Soga's mangroves. For stays of three days or more, transport between Angurman and Bubaque is complimentary.
Meals of freshly caught fish are feasts for the eyes and stomach. Served grilled or as ceviche or sashimi, the fish is accompanied by vegetables, rice and even imported sausage.
