Bridge Cottage Bistro

Top choice in Whitby

This outstanding Modern British restaurant, in the pretty coastal village of Sandsend 3 miles north of Whitby, may well be the east coast's best eating experience. Its no-nonsense setting in a bare old coastal cottage lets the food sing, and the spotlight is always on Yorkshire, with delights like hay-baked lamb, Whitby sea trout with cured beetroot, and Eccles cakes with Wensleydale ice cream.

Friday nights are fish nights, with a set six- to nine-course East Coast Tasting Menu – good value at £38 with a glass of wine. There's also a slow-cooked Sunday menu (£15.50 for a main and pudding), plus coffee from Malton and homemade cakes during the day. Bookings advised.

The X4 bus runs from Whitby along the beach road to Sandsend, but it's a beautiful, breezy walk: follow the promenade above Whitby Sands from the West Cliff and it'll lead you straight there in about an hour.
