Behind its golden-stone exterior, this historic landmark hotel – here since the 14th century, it welcomed both Charles I and Oliver Cromwell as guests – has been entirely revamped. As well as 90-odd rooms, from the smallest (designated ‘cosy’) to opulent suites, it holds a good restaurant (mains £15 to £29), a less formal wine bar, and an indoor pool.
Oh, and it’s pronounced ‘liggon’, incidentally.
