Garden House Inn

Northeast England

Dating from the 18th century, rustic country-style inn Garden House does great lunchtime sandwiches, such as lobster or crab, fennel and 'Nduja (spicy pork salami) and locavore menus at both lunch and dinner (Lindisfarne oysters with wild garlic and smoked chilli, roast Northumberland lamb with hazelnut-crusted beetroot). Its six cosy rooms (four doubles, two for families; from £85/105) have vintage-inspired decor.

Mini versions of mains are a hit with kids.
