El Beaterío Guest House

Top choice in Santo Domingo

Get thee to this nunnery – if you’re looking for austere elegance. Each of the 11 large rooms is sparsely furnished, but the wood-beamed ceilings and stone floors are truly special; the tile-floored bathrooms are modern and well maintained. It’s easy to imagine the former function of this 16th-century building, with its heavy stone facade, and dark, vaulted front room.

These days it serves as a beautiful reading room and dining area with classical music playing softly, giving way to a lush and sunny inner courtyard inspiring peace and tranquility. The owners have even created a mini-museum on the exterior walls, with placards explaining the history of convents in the DR.
