Pei Mansion Hotel

Shanghai

Travel back to old Shanghai at this beautiful heritage hotel (c 1934), which was the former residence of a Shanghainese banker. Its unique architecture incorporates art deco design with Chinese features. Spacious rooms are filled with antique furnishings. Though it's comfortable, don't expect five-star luxury or service. English isn't a strong point, but it does have a handy central location.

The Cantonese restaurant Xin Rong Ji has one Michelin star and is set in a beautiful period dining room; the palatial front garden rounds out the experience.
