Shān Yǔ Hǎi

Shandong

Hidden down a fascinating maze of historic residential alleyways – known collectively as Spring Alley (泉巷, Quán Xiàng) – this welcoming guesthouse with English-speaking staff is housed in a restyled old church building. The simple but spacious rooms have high ceilings and are off a central covered courtyard.

Walk north up Bianzhi Xiang (鞭指巷), then turn left at the end, down Shuanzhongci Jie (双忠祠街), and it's on your left at the entrance to tiny Xiyundouyu Jie (西熨斗隅街). No English sign, but on hotel-booking websites it's sometimes known as Mountain & Sea Culture Hotel.
