Situated in Nanjing's former legation quarters, Yihe Mansions is a collection of magnificently restored former embassies and homes of military generals. Rooms are generous in size, with Nanjing-era dark-wood interiors and luxurious linens. You may hear the occasional rumble from the antique plumbing, but the enormous marble bathrooms are in excellent nick. Online discounts of up to 70% are not uncommon.
Your stay includes admission to a handful of small, onsite exhibitions (10am to noon and 2.30pm to 5pm Monday and Wednesday to Saturday) on topics such as Chinese painting, rare books, cuisine and fashion. Admission is ¥25 for nonguests.
