Old Town Night Market

Henan

Festooned with brightly lit red lanterns, this lively night market has a cornucopia of snacks. The market is now cash-free, meaning that if you aren't able to pay with WeChat or Alipay, you'll need to purchase a payment card (¥10). Look for the red tent and table halfway along the market.

There are menus in Chinese with marked prices, but you can just point and choose from a variety of meat, seafood and vegetables, all served grilled or wok-fried. Top picks include lamb kebabs (羊肉串, yángròu chuàn), crispy tofu skins (烤豆皮, kǎo dòu pí) and, for dessert, 'fried' yoghurt (炒酸奶, chǎo suānnǎi).
