Once the darling of the Russian glamour set, the Modern Hotel maintains a European aesthetic in the lobby and cafe, but the rooms are now a distinctly post-modern Communist bleak. The 1906 building halfway up Harbin's historic street features some original marble, blond-wood accents and art-nouveau touches.
Even if you don't stay here, spend some time checking out the lobby bar's display of hotel memorabilia. Note that the entrance to the hotel is around the back. Discounts available.
A popular brewpub operated by the hotel is accessible on the south side of the building.
