Taikoo Li Sanlitun

Beijing

Beijing's premier destination for haute couture and urbane dining, Taikoo Li is where the fashionistas go to splash the cash. An open-air mall complex either side of Opposite House hotel, Taikoo Li North is the better-bred half, carrying luxe labels such as Alexander McQueen, Canada Goose and Korea's Gentle Monster eyewear, while down south is Apple, Adidas and most of the restaurants, many with terrace seating.

The sunken concourse in Taikoo Li North is a sophisticated outdoor hangout, with several cafes offering respite from the commercial din.

Opened in 2008 (when it was called Sanlitun Village), this Olympic-year landmark project is the work of Hong Kong company Swire Properties, and remains a model of good mall management.
